The 2026/27 Taupō trout fishing season begins on 1 July, bringing a handful of changes that are worth knowing before your next trip on the lake.

The most significant update for anglers is an increase to the daily bag limit, rising from six to eight trout. The change has been introduced to help maintain a healthy balance between trout numbers and their primary food source, smelt.

If you’re planning to fish Lake Taupō this season, you’ll also need a 2026/27 Taupō fishing licence before launching.
